A 19-year-old woman has appeared before the Mankweng Magistrates’ Court in connection with the murder of local businessman Tebogo Mothapo,
Kagontle Bopape made her first court appearance on Monday, where she faced six charges stemming from the incident. Among the allegations against her are murder and robbery.
Bopape was arrested on 30 August and is reportedly the second suspect to be taken into custody in connection with the businessman’s death. Her arrest comes weeks after another suspect, 27-year-old Osama Asad, was arrested in July.
The circumstances surrounding Mothapo’s death have sparked concern in the community, particularly because of his involvement in business. Investigators are expected to continue gathering evidence as the case progresses and work to establish the circumstances that allegedly led to the fatal incident.
During her appearance, the court postponed the matter to 1 September to allow Bopape to obtain legal representation through Legal Aid. The postponement is part of the normal court process and does not amount to a finding of guilt.
Bopape remains an accused person and will have the opportunity to respond to the charges brought against her as the criminal proceedings continue.
The arrest of the second suspect is expected to assist investigators in piecing together the events surrounding Mothapo’s death. Police will likely continue questioning suspects and examining evidence that could shed light on the alleged robbery and murder.
Asad, who was arrested in July, is also facing charges linked to the case. The two accused may eventually appear together as the prosecution builds its case, depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation and court proceedings.
