A 22-year-old man from Carnarvon in the Northern Cape has been sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment after being convicted of raping his biological mother while she was asleep at home.
The shocking case was heard at the Carnarvon Regional Court, where the young man eventually pleaded guilty to the rape after DNA evidence connected him to the crime.
The incident happened on 23 November 2025 at the 42-year-old woman’s home. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the woman had been drinking alcohol with her life partner before the two went to sleep.
The accused had also been drinking earlier that evening while visiting a friend. When he returned home, he found his mother and her partner asleep.
Mother Wakes Up During Assault
According to NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane, the accused approached his sleeping mother, undressed her and sexually assaulted her without her consent.
The woman woke up during the attack and was horrified to discover that her own son was on top of her. When she confronted him, he immediately fled from the house.
The traumatised woman later informed her life partner about what had happened, after which the matter was reported to the police.
The accused initially denied committing the offence in a warning statement after his arrest. However, investigators obtained DNA evidence that subsequently linked him to the sexual assault.
Faced with the evidence presented by the prosecution, including the victim’s testimony and forensic results, the accused ultimately changed his position and pleaded guilty to rape.
Victim Describes Deep Emotional Trauma
During the sentencing proceedings, State prosecutor Xolisa March presented a Victim Impact Statement prepared by the complainant with assistance from Court Preparation Officers Trott Manghana and Nicolene Moora.
The woman told the court about the devastating emotional consequences of the attack. She explained that she had raised her son as a single parent and therefore felt particularly betrayed by what he had done.
She described feeling deeply hurt and said the assault had left her struggling emotionally. She continues to receive counselling and reportedly experiences ongoing trauma, including difficulty sleeping.
State Calls for Serious Punishment
The prosecution argued that the offence deserved a severe sentence because the accused had violated not only his mother’s dignity and bodily integrity but also the fundamental trust that exists between a parent and child.
The State further argued that the accused had deliberately taken advantage of his mother’s vulnerable condition, knowing that she had consumed alcohol and was asleep.
The court also heard that the accused had recently been released on parole after serving a sentence related to a dishonesty offence.
Prosecutors argued that committing such a serious crime soon after being released demonstrated a disregard for the law and the opportunity for rehabilitation that he had previously been given.
Court Hands Down 20-Year Sentence
Although the court considered the accused’s guilty plea as a mitigating factor, it ultimately found that the seriousness of the offence required a lengthy period of imprisonment.
The 22-year-old was sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment.
The court also ordered that his details be placed on the National Register for Sex Offenders, preventing him from being employed in certain positions involving vulnerable people.
The NPA welcomed the sentence, saying it demonstrates the seriousness with which sexual offences are treated by South Africa’s courts and criminal justice system.
The prosecution service also encouraged victims and survivors of sexual violence to report offences and make use of available victim-support services throughout the criminal justice process.
