Fatal Crash on the R101
A devastating road accident in Limpopo has claimed the lives of six people, including a police officer and five inmates. The fatal incident occurred on the R101 South near Mookgophong (formerly Naboomspruit) on Thursday, 14 August 2025, when a South African Police Service (SAPS) vehicle transporting prisoners collided with a truck.
The victims were en route from Mookgopong in the Waterberg District to a court appearance in Naboomspruit when the collision took place. Authorities have confirmed that the police officer driving the transport vehicle and all five inmates inside were pronounced dead at the scene.
Multiple Injuries Reported
In addition to the fatalities, at least 11 other people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) teams rushed to the scene and immediately began treating the injured. A Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) aircraft was dispatched to provide urgent evacuation for those in critical condition.
Paramedics worked under intense pressure to stabilise victims before transporting them to nearby medical facilities. According to reports, some of the injured were passengers in the truck, while others were part of the SAPS transport team.
Road Closure and Traffic Disruptions
The crash forced authorities to close off a section of the R101 South for several hours. Traffic officials have urged motorists to seek alternative routes while clean-up and investigative operations continue. The closure caused significant delays for commuters and long-distance transport vehicles travelling through the busy corridor connecting Limpopo’s rural and urban centres.
Law enforcement officers have warned the public to exercise patience and avoid attempting to bypass the blocked area. Road safety experts say the R101, a key arterial route, has been the site of multiple serious accidents in recent years due to heavy truck traffic and high-speed travel.
Preliminary Investigation Underway
The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the SAPS prisoner transport vehicle and the truck were travelling in opposite directions when the crash occurred, but investigators are yet to confirm the sequence of events.
The SAPS has stated that a full internal review will be conducted to determine whether protocol was followed in the transport of inmates. Witnesses are being urged to come forward with any information that could assist accident reconstruction teams.
Community in Shock
News of the accident has shocked both the local community and the broader South African public. Residents of Mookgopong have expressed grief and disbelief at the loss of life, particularly the death of the police officer, described by colleagues as a “dedicated and disciplined” member of the force.
Families of the deceased inmates have been informed, and the Department of Correctional Services has pledged to provide necessary support, including counselling.
A Grim Reminder of Road Safety Risks
This tragedy underscores the persistent dangers on South African roads. Authorities have once again appealed to all drivers to remain vigilant, adhere to speed limits, and exercise caution, especially when sharing routes with heavy vehicles.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates will be released as more details emerge.
