A 52-year-old teacher from East London has been arrested on shocking charges of **human trafficking**, **sexual exploitation**, and **operating an illegal brothel**.
Long-Term Investigation Exposes Shocking Crimes
The arrest follows a year-long investigation led by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, which began in **September 2023**. Authorities discovered that the suspect, a respected educator in East London, allegedly lured and recruited young women from the **former Transkei region**, including **Qumbu, Mthatha**, and **Ngqeleni**.
Investigations revealed that the women were brought to East London under false pretences and accommodated at the teacher’s residence. Once there, they were reportedly forced into prostitution.
According to sources, the victims were made to engage in sexual activities with multiple clients, and the money earned was handed over to the suspect. She allegedly charged them **R250 to R300 per night** for accommodation, depending on the room, and collected the payments either in cash or through bank transfers.
Arrest at School and Upcoming Court Appearance
The Hawks obtained a warrant for her arrest and executed it on **Wednesday, 15 October**, at her place of work — the school where she was teaching. The suspect was immediately taken into custody.
She is expected to appear in the **East London Magistrates’ Court** on **Thursday, 16 October**, facing multiple serious charges related to human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and running a brothel.
Hawks Commend Investigators
Major-General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, the provincial head of the Hawks, commended the investigation team for their dedication and professionalism. He emphasized that law enforcement will continue to dismantle human trafficking rings that exploit vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children, in the province.
“This arrest sends a strong message that such despicable crimes will not go unpunished,” said Ngwenya. “We are determined to bring all those involved in these operations to justice.”
Community in Shock
The local community has expressed disbelief following the teacher’s arrest. Many parents and colleagues described her as a “quiet and respectful woman” who was passionate about education — making the allegations even more shocking.
One resident said, “It’s hard to believe someone we trusted with our children could be accused of such horrific acts. We hope the law takes its course and justice is served.”
Authorities have since urged anyone who might have been a victim of the accused or has relevant information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
The case highlights growing concerns about **human trafficking and sexual exploitation** in the Eastern Cape, with law enforcement intensifying efforts to identify and shut down operations that prey on young women seeking better opportunities.
