The Umlazi community gathered in grief and solidarity as six members of the Gumede family, who tragically lost their lives in a horrific crash on the N2 near Scottburgh, were laid to rest. The emotional funeral drew relatives, neighbours, and community leaders who came to honour the memories of the young lives cut short and to support the bereaved family during an unimaginably painful time.

The victims, whose ages ranged from just one year old to 34, were identified as Thandolwethu (1), Andile (3), Aminathi (6), Amanda (15), Thulisile (34), and Nomusa (32) Gumede. Their deaths sent shockwaves through their community, leaving many struggling to comprehend the magnitude of the loss. The children, described as joyful and full of promise, were mourned deeply, while the adults were remembered as pillars of strength within the family.
The tragic incident occurred as the family was returning home to Umlazi after visiting relatives. Their vehicle reportedly collided with a truck along the N2, a major highway that has seen numerous accidents over the years. In a heartbreaking twist, the driver of the vehicle survived the crash, but all six passengers were killed instantly. The severity of the collision has prompted renewed calls for better road safety measures and heightened vigilance among motorists.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Mbali Shinga, attended the funeral to offer condolences on behalf of the provincial government. In her address, she expressed profound sorrow over the loss and reaffirmed her department’s commitment to supporting the affected family. The Social Relief of Distress program has already been activated to provide essential assistance, including food parcels, emotional support, and temporary aid to help the family cope in the weeks ahead.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the deadly crash. Early reports suggest that weather conditions and road layout may have been contributing factors, but police have not yet confirmed the exact cause. The investigation aims to provide clarity and, where possible, prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

As loved ones gathered at the funeral service, the atmosphere was filled with tears, prayers, and heartfelt tributes. Family members shared fond memories of the Gumede relatives, recalling their laughter, kindness, and the dreams they held for the future. Community members, pastors, and friends spoke about the importance of unity in times of sorrow and encouraged the grieving family to lean on the support around them.
The loss of six family members at once has left an irreplaceable void, not only within the Gumede household but also across the broader community. Their passing serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of life and the urgent need for safer roads on the N2 corridor.
Though their lives were tragically cut short, the legacy of Thandolwethu, Andile, Aminathi, Amanda, Thulisile, and Nomusa will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
