A heartbreaking turn of events has unfolded in Limpopo after two of the three newborn triplets delivered earlier this week at Letaba Hospital have tragically passed away, leaving a family and community in mourning.
The latest loss occurred on Saturday night, when the baby girl died due to complications linked to a congenital heart condition. According to the provincial health department, the condition contributed to severe respiratory difficulties that ultimately proved fatal despite medical efforts to save her.
This devastating news follows closely on the death of her brother, the only boy among the triplets, who died just two days earlier on Thursday night. He had reportedly been struggling with breathing complications shortly after birth. Medical staff had been closely monitoring his condition, but unfortunately, his health deteriorated rapidly.

The triplets’ birth had initially brought joy and attention, as the 33-year-old mother celebrated the rare and special arrival of her three babies. What began as a moment of happiness quickly turned into a painful ordeal as the family faced one loss after another within a matter of days.
Limpopo Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego expressed deep sadness over the situation and confirmed the developments publicly. She noted that while two of the infants have sadly died, the third baby is still alive and receiving urgent medical care.
“This means we have now lost two babies, and the remaining child has been transferred to Mankweng for further care,” Mashego said in a statement.
The surviving baby has since been moved to Mankweng Hospital, a facility equipped with more advanced neonatal care services. There, doctors and specialists are working around the clock to stabilise the infant and provide the necessary treatment to improve her chances of survival.
Health officials have not disclosed further details about the condition of the surviving baby but have assured the public that she is receiving the highest level of care available. The department has also extended its condolences to the grieving mother and her family, acknowledging the immense emotional toll of losing two children in such a short period.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the challenges faced in neonatal care, particularly in cases involving premature births or congenital conditions. While medical teams continue to do everything possible, such situations remain complex and unpredictable.
Community members have also expressed their sympathy and support for the family, with many sharing messages of comfort during this incredibly difficult time. The story has touched many across the province, serving as a reminder of how quickly joy can turn into sorrow.
As the remaining baby continues to fight for her life, hopes remain that she will recover and bring a measure of healing to a grieving family that has endured an unimaginable loss.
