Calls for a biopic on controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala have gained momentum as South Africans debate who should portray him on screen. Social media users overwhelmingly agree that award-winning actor Mothusi Magano is the perfect choice for the role, praising his versatility and ability to embody complex characters.
The discussion began on Wednesday, 3 December 2025, when X (Twitter) user joy_zelda shared a photo of Magano, suggesting he should lead the cast should a Matlala biographical film or series be produced. With the businessman’s ongoing legal troubles making headlines daily, many South Africans believe his story warrants a deep dive—possibly even a Netflix documentary or drama series.

Magano, celebrated for his powerful performances in productions like Tsotsi, as well as his recent role as a shady schoolteacher in an SABC 1 drama, has proven his skill in portraying morally complicated personalities. Social media users argued that his emotional range and subtle acting style would bring depth to a character as controversial as Matlala.
As Matlala’s case continues to unfold, the public is increasingly exposed to stories of South Africa’s criminal underworld. Much like the high-profile saga involving Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana—which later became the subject of television documentaries—many now suspect that Matlala’s story will eventually be adapted for the screen. Online users believe that Magano could bring authenticity to the role, making the project compelling and culturally significant.

Support for Magano was widespread across social media. Some users noted that with just a beard and a few stylistic tweaks, he would closely resemble Matlala. Others praised his reputation for convincingly playing “sneaky” or mysterious roles. Creative professionals were even encouraged to seize the moment, with many saying the casting decision had already been made unofficially by “Black Twitter.”
However, not everyone was excited about the idea of a biopic. A handful of users criticised the public for glorifying alleged criminals, arguing that entertainment should not overshadow the serious crimes Matlala is accused of. They questioned the message such a production would send, especially if portrayed without careful context.
Despite the mixed reactions, the dominant view remained clear: South Africans feel that if Matlala’s story is ever told on screen, Mothusi Magano is the obvious and most capable actor to take on the role. His proven range and ability to embody layered personalities make him an ideal match for a character as controversial, influential, and mysterious as Cat Matlala.
In previous discussions surrounding Matlala, cultural commentator Ntsiki Mazwai also warned citizens not to become too enamoured with sensational criminal figures. She cautioned against ignoring the seriousness of their alleged crimes simply because their stories are gripping.
Still, with ongoing public fascination, the push for a Matlala biopic shows no signs of slowing down—and Mothusi Magano remains the people’s top choice to bring the character to life.
