Police in Mpumalanga have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of the body of 25-year-old Simphiwe Nyalunga in bushes near the Kamagugu Road area of Magugu, Mbombela. The heartbreaking discovery has left her family and the local community searching for answers as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
Simphiwe’s remains were found on 30 June in an advanced state of decomposition. Her family has since formally identified the body, bringing a painful end to the uncertainty surrounding her disappearance.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, Simphiwe was last seen leaving her parents’ home in the Clau Clau area. Police indicated that no official missing person report had been opened before her body was discovered. It has also been reported that she may have been living on the streets during the period leading up to her death, although investigators are still piecing together the timeline of her final days.

The body was reportedly discovered by a foreign national who had sought refuge in nearby bushes while fleeing from members of a local community group during anti-migrant protests in the area. While hiding, the individual came across the decomposed remains and alerted the authorities, leading to the police response.
Crime scene investigators examined the area thoroughly and recovered several items that may assist with the investigation. Among the evidence collected was a used condom found close to the body. The item has been sent for forensic analysis to determine whether it is connected to the incident and whether it could provide crucial DNA evidence.
Because the body had significantly decomposed, forensic experts have not yet been able to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have also not confirmed whether Simphiwe was sexually assaulted before her death, and investigators are awaiting the results of forensic examinations before drawing any conclusions.
Police also confirmed that the body showed signs of mutilation. The condition of the remains has sparked widespread speculation within the community, with some residents suggesting the possibility of a ritual-related killing. However, investigators have urged the public not to speculate, stressing that no evidence has yet confirmed such claims. Police say they will rely on forensic findings and witness statements as the investigation progresses.
The tragic death of Simphiwe Nyalunga has once again raised concerns about violence against women and vulnerable individuals in South Africa. Community members have expressed shock and sadness over the incident, while many have called for a swift investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen Simphiwe in the days before her death or who has any information that could assist investigators to come forward. Authorities believe even the smallest detail could prove vital in solving the case.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police say further updates will be provided once forensic results become available and detectives make progress in identifying those responsible for the young woman’s death.
