Internationally acclaimed DJ and music producer Black Coffee has publicly addressed long-standing speculation surrounding his relationship with actress and fashion entrepreneur Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa, insisting that the two were never legally married. His remarks have reignited public debate after conflicting reports emerged about a court ruling allegedly recognising their union and awarding a significant settlement.

In a candid response shared on social media, Black Coffee stated that he was never married to Enhle, adding that she herself is fully aware of this fact. According to the award-winning DJ, what many South Africans believed to be a traditional wedding was not a customary marriage at all. He claimed the event was merely a photoshoot, joking that the outfits worn on the day resembled Halloween costumes rather than traditional wedding attire.
Black Coffee acknowledged that speaking out could place him at odds with his legal team, but said remaining silent had done little to clear his name. He further addressed comparisons being drawn between his case and a recent Constitutional Court ruling that recognised certain customary marriages without full traditional processes being followed. According to him, the circumstances of his relationship with Enhle are fundamentally different.

He explained that for a customary marriage to be valid, there must be clear intention from both parties to enter into such a union. In his case, he insists that neither he nor Enhle had any intention of being customarily married. He claims this lack of intent is supported by legal documents submitted by both parties during court proceedings.
The DJ also revealed that the couple signed a prenuptial agreement prior to their relationship progressing further. This agreement, he said, explicitly stated that they were unmarried. Black Coffee claims the prenup formed part of their long-term plan to eventually enter into a civil marriage, not a customary one. These arguments, he says, form the basis of his appeal against the court ruling that has sparked widespread controversy.
However, reports circulating in the media paint a very different picture. Publications such as Sunday World have reported that the court found the relationship to constitute a valid marriage in community of property. According to these reports, Enhle would be entitled to 50% of the assets accumulated during their time together, including properties, vehicles, investments, and Black Coffee’s lucrative music royalties. It is further alleged that a Receiver and Liquidator would be appointed to oversee the division of the estate.
The same reports claim that Black Coffee was ordered to pay child maintenance of R25,000 per child per month for their two children, spousal maintenance exceeding R67,000 per month, and to cover all school and medical expenses.
These conflicting narratives have left the public confused, with many questioning which version of events reflects the legal reality. While Black Coffee maintains that no marriage ever existed and that this is supported by legal documentation, media reports suggest the court has ruled otherwise.
As the appeal process unfolds, the true legal standing of Black Coffee and Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa’s relationship remains uncertain. For now, South Africans are left watching closely as one of the country’s most high-profile legal battles between two public figures continues to play out in the public eye.
