Capitec Bank has issued a public apology following a shocking incident in which a grieving family brought the body of their deceased relative to one of its branches in KwaZulu-Natal, allegedly in protest over delayed funeral policy payments.
The dramatic scene unfolded at the bank’s branch in Stanger, located in KwaDukuza, where stunned bystanders watched as a hearse pulled up outside the premises. According to videos circulating widely on social media, several women stepped out of the vehicle and opened the back before removing what appeared to be a covered body.

Witnesses described a tense and emotional atmosphere as the women, dressed in traditional headscarves and doeks, carried the body toward the entrance of the bank. Some onlookers reportedly ran in shock as the group entered the branch. Images that later surfaced online showed a covered body lying on a stretcher inside what appeared to be the banking hall.
While details surrounding the dispute have not been officially confirmed, social media users claimed the family had been frustrated by what they believed were delays in the payout of a funeral cover policy. It is alleged that the payment was meant to assist with burial arrangements, prompting the family to take drastic action in an effort to prove the death and demand urgent resolution.

Responding to media inquiries, Capitec spokesperson Asha Patel confirmed the incident and expressed the bank’s regret over the distress caused.
“Capitec is deeply saddened by the distressing incident that occurred at our Stanger branch in KwaDukuza. We extend our sincere condolences to the family during what is clearly an incredibly difficult and emotional time. We understand the sensitivity of the circumstances and deeply apologise to those affected,” Patel said.
The bank indicated that the branch was temporarily closed following the incident to allow management to address the matter and provide support to staff and those impacted. Officials also confirmed that the institution is engaging with relevant authorities to ensure that all necessary procedures are handled appropriately.
“We are providing the necessary support to all affected parties. Capitec is engaging with the relevant authorities and will ensure that all appropriate processes are followed with care, dignity, and respect,” the bank said in its statement.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion online, with many expressing sympathy for the grieving family while others questioned the circumstances that led to such an extreme public demonstration. Funeral cover policies are designed to provide immediate financial relief to families during times of loss, and any perceived delays can intensify emotional strain.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether any formal complaints or investigations have been lodged in relation to the matter. Meanwhile, the viral footage continues to circulate, drawing national attention to the incident and raising broader questions about communication and dispute resolution between financial institutions and clients during times of bereavement.
Capitec has not disclosed further details regarding the specific policy in question but reiterated its commitment to handling the situation with compassion and urgency.
