A young Cape Town petrol attendant whose quick thinking helped save lives during an unexpected childbirth has received overwhelming support from South Africans, with more than R67,000 raised to help him pursue his dream of becoming a paramedic.
Twenty-one-year-old Chevaan Abrahams captured the hearts of many after stepping into action when a pregnant woman unexpectedly went into labour at a service station where he works. What began as an ordinary shift at Shell Zevenwacht in Kuils River on 22 May 2026 quickly turned into a life-changing experience that would inspire thousands across the country.

According to reports, the pregnant woman arrived at the petrol station while in active labour. With emergency services still on their way and no medical professionals immediately available, Abrahams remained calm under intense pressure and assisted in delivering a healthy baby boy.
Despite having no formal medical training, the young petrol attendant relied on instinct, courage, and a desire to help. His remarkable actions drew widespread praise on social media, where many hailed him as a hero.
The story soon caught the attention of popular content creator @coolstorybru_, who learned that Abrahams had long dreamed of working in emergency medical services. Inspired by his bravery and natural ability to remain composed during a crisis, the content creator launched a crowdfunding campaign through BackaBuddy to help him achieve that goal.
The campaign quickly gained momentum, attracting donations from people across South Africa who wanted to support the aspiring paramedic. Within days, the fundraising initiative surpassed R67,000, bringing Abrahams significantly closer to obtaining the education and training needed to enter the emergency medical field.
Organisers of the campaign explained that the funds would be used to cover tuition fees, study materials, equipment, and other costs associated with paramedic training. The initiative remains open for further contributions, giving supporters an opportunity to continue investing in the young man’s future.
Many donors shared heartfelt messages of encouragement alongside their contributions.
One supporter, Pieter de Gouveia, praised Abrahams for his selfless actions and wished him success in his future career. Others expressed their belief that his heroic actions were evidence that he was destined to help others through emergency medical services.
Another donor commented that while people may make plans for their lives, sometimes opportunities arise unexpectedly, opening doors to a greater purpose. Several contributors also wished him success in his studies and expressed confidence that he would become an outstanding paramedic.
The remarkable response from the public highlights the power of community support and the impact one courageous act can have on a person’s future. What started as a routine shift at a petrol station has now become a stepping stone toward a promising career in healthcare.
For Abrahams, delivering a baby under extraordinary circumstances not only changed the lives of a mother and child but may also have transformed his own future. Thanks to the generosity of South Africans, the young hero now has a realistic opportunity to turn his dream of becoming a paramedic into a reality.
