A devastating collision on the N1 highway near Polokwane, Limpopo, has left 12 South African Police Service (SAPS) officers injured and one motorist dead.
The accident happened on Friday evening, 28 August 2026, at about 19:00 near the Astron Filling Station outside Polokwane. The crash involved a civilian sedan and a SAPS minibus carrying the police officers.
According to preliminary information from provincial authorities, the sedan was travelling northbound on the N1 when it allegedly veered out of its lane. The vehicle crossed into the path of oncoming traffic before colliding head-on with the police minibus.
The impact was severe, and the civilian vehicle immediately caught fire. The flames also posed a serious threat to the officers trapped inside the damaged police vehicle, turning the scene into a desperate rescue operation.
Motorists who witnessed the collision reportedly stopped to assist. Despite the dangerous conditions, members of the public worked alongside emergency personnel, traffic officials and other law enforcement officers to help free the injured SAPS members from the wreckage.
Their quick intervention helped ensure that all 12 officers were rescued before the situation became even more dangerous. Emergency medical teams then assessed the injured officers at the scene before transporting them to medical facilities across Limpopo for further treatment.
Authorities have confirmed that the officers are receiving medical care. However, details about the specific injuries suffered by each officer have not been released.
The driver of the civilian sedan was declared dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased motorist had not yet been confirmed at the time of the report, with authorities expected to verify the person’s identity and notify the next of kin.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers visited the scene following the crash. He expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased motorist while wishing the injured officers a speedy recovery.
Scheepers also praised the members of the public and emergency responders who risked their own safety to assist the police officers.
Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety Violet Mathye similarly commended the motorists, traffic officials, law enforcement personnel and emergency workers involved in the rescue effort.
Following the crash, the N1 was temporarily closed while forensic investigators, accident reconstruction specialists and clean-up teams worked at the scene. Traffic was diverted, with motorists advised to use the R101 as an alternative route between Mokopane and Polokwane.
Meanwhile, investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are continuing. SAPS accident response teams and traffic safety investigators are examining the wreckage and gathering information to establish why the sedan allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic.
Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the accident or may have captured the moments before the collision on a dashboard camera to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The tragic crash has once again highlighted the dangers faced by motorists and emergency personnel on busy South African highways, while the swift actions of bystanders and first responders prevented an already devastating incident from claiming more lives.
