A dramatic cash-in-transit robbery unfolded in Verulam on Monday, sending shockwaves through the community after a group of heavily armed suspects ambushed and bombed an armoured vehicle on Old Inanda Road.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred earlier in the day when a cash-in-transit van was intercepted by two vehicles allegedly carrying around ten suspects. Witnesses say the suspects were heavily armed and acted with precision, blocking the security vehicle before launching their attack.

Security teams and emergency responders, including KZN VIP Security and Emergency Medical Services, rushed to the scene shortly after the robbery was reported. Upon arrival, authorities found that the suspects had opened fire on the armoured vehicle before detonating explosives in an apparent attempt to gain access to the cash inside.
The explosion left visible damage to the vehicle and caused panic among motorists and residents in the area. Despite the intensity of the attack, it has been confirmed that no security officers were injured during the robbery — a fortunate outcome given the violent nature of the incident.

Reports indicate that an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen during the heist. In addition to the money, firearms were also reportedly taken. The suspects are believed to have fled the scene in the direction of Inanda shortly after carrying out the robbery.
As a precautionary measure, paramedics assessed three occupants of the cash-in-transit vehicle at the scene. Although no injuries were reported, medical teams conducted thorough evaluations to ensure that those involved did not suffer any trauma-related complications.
Law enforcement officials quickly secured the area to begin investigations. Jabu Ngcobo Road (Old Inanda Road) was closed between Dawncrest and Mountview to allow the South African Police Service (SAPS) to carry out forensic examinations and gather evidence. The road closure caused traffic disruptions, with motorists advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing as police work to track down the suspects responsible for the brazen daylight robbery.
Cash-in-transit heists remain a serious concern in South Africa, often involving coordinated groups using high-powered weapons and explosives. These incidents not only place security personnel at risk but also endanger innocent bystanders and motorists who may find themselves caught in the crossfire.
Residents in Verulam expressed concern over the boldness of the attack, noting that such incidents create fear and uncertainty within communities. Many are calling for increased police visibility and stronger preventative measures to combat organised crime.
All emergency services remain on high alert as authorities continue their investigation. Further updates are expected as more details emerge regarding the suspects and the extent of the stolen cash.
Motorists are urged to remain cautious and follow official traffic advisories while police operations continue in the area.
