The body of 14-year-old Grade 8 learner **Endinako Dudu** has been recovered following a heartbreaking search after severe flooding in the Makana Local Municipality area.
Endinako, a pupil at Mary Waters High School, was reported missing after heavy rains battered Makhanda and surrounding communities earlier this week. According to reports, she was on her way home from school when she was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Kowie River.
The region experienced intense downpours that caused rivers and streams to swell rapidly, overwhelming drainage systems and flooding several neighbourhoods. Residents described the rainfall as some of the heaviest seen in recent months, with roads submerged and access to certain areas temporarily cut off.

Emergency services were activated shortly after Endinako was reported missing. Search-and-rescue teams worked tirelessly despite dangerous conditions. The operation included local disaster management officials, divers, and additional support teams deployed to assist in locating the teenager.
The search had to be suspended temporarily due to poor visibility and strong water currents, but teams resumed efforts at first light. Tragically, Endinako’s body was discovered in the river, bringing a devastating end to the rescue mission.
The loss has left the Makhanda community in deep mourning. Municipal leaders extended their condolences to the Dudu family, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather conditions. Local authorities also visited the grieving family to offer support during this difficult time.
The flooding did not only claim a young life but also caused widespread damage across parts of the municipality. Several homes were affected, with reports of structural damage in both formal and informal settlements. Fallen trees blocked roads, electricity supply was disrupted in some areas, and infrastructure suffered significant strain due to the heavy rains.
Municipal officials have since begun assessing the extent of the damage while coordinating relief efforts for affected residents. Disaster management teams remain on high alert as more rainfall could worsen already fragile conditions.
Community members have expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy, with many calling for improved safety measures around rivers and better stormwater management systems. Parents and guardians have also been urged to caution children about the dangers of crossing rivers or flooded pathways during heavy rainfall.
Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of avoiding flooded areas, particularly during severe weather warnings. Swollen rivers can become dangerously unpredictable within minutes, even in areas that are typically shallow and considered safe.
The tragic death of Endinako Dudu serves as a somber reminder of how quickly natural disasters can turn deadly. As the community grieves, there are renewed calls for improved infrastructure and greater awareness to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
