A deeply disturbing incident in Gauteng has left a family grieving and a community demanding answers after 25-year-old Misokuhle Mvunelwa died from severe burn injuries allegedly inflicted by the mother of his child.
According to reports, the shocking incident occurred on New Year’s Day when a 25-year-old woman allegedly poured petrol on Mvunelwa while he was asleep in bed and set him alight. A neighbour who noticed smoke coming from the house rushed to investigate, only to find the situation far worse than expected.

The witness claimed that the suspect had locked the security gate and was inside the house while Mvunelwa burned. When confronted, she reportedly stated that Mvunelwa was on fire but failed to call for help or unlock the gate. Moments later, Mvunelwa appeared, naked and engulfed in flames, accusing the woman of setting him alight.
What left the witness confused and disturbed was the suspect’s alleged lack of urgency in seeking assistance. When questioned about her actions, she reportedly said she acted out of jealousy, accusing Mvunelwa of cheating and ignoring her calls, despite claiming she loved him.
Mvunelwa was rushed to hospital following the attack and fought for his life for over two months. Tragically, he succumbed to organ failure caused by the extensive burn wounds on March 17.

Police initially opened a case of attempted murder, and the suspect was arrested and appeared in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on January 5. However, she was later released as investigations continued. Following Mvunelwa’s death, the case has since been upgraded to murder.
Family members have expressed frustration over how the investigation has been handled. They allege significant delays in the collection of forensic evidence, claiming police only returned to the scene months later after they lodged a formal complaint.

Mvunelwa’s mother, Siyasanga Mvunelwa, said the family is struggling to understand why it took so long for authorities to act. She questioned the reliability of evidence collected months after the incident and stressed their determination to see justice served.
His grandmother, Nomzekelo Moloi, also shared troubling details about the relationship, describing it as volatile. She revealed that the suspect had previously accused Mvunelwa of infidelity and frequently contacted family members late at night, demanding intervention.
In a particularly alarming incident days before the attack, the woman allegedly falsely claimed that their three-year-old child had died. The family later discovered this was untrue. There were also reports of prior violent confrontations, including one where the suspect allegedly arrived armed with a knife and damaged property.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with forensic results still pending. Police have also indicated that an internal process has been initiated following the family’s complaint regarding delays in the case.
As the investigation continues, Mvunelwa’s family remains determined to seek justice for his death. The tragic case has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the urgent need for timely intervention and accountability.
