The community of Lulekani, just outside Phalaborwa, has gathered in sorrow to bid farewell to baby Kuhlula Sithole, one of the conjoined twins who recently underwent a complex separation procedure. The funeral service is currently taking place at Luthuli Section, where family, friends, and community members have come together to honour the young life that was lost too soon.
Baby Kuhlula passed away on Good Friday, 3 April 2026, only a few days after a delicate and highly specialised operation aimed at separating her from her twin. The tragic loss has left the family and the wider community heartbroken, as many had been hopeful following news that the surgery had been successful.

The twins were separated during a rare and historic seven-hour procedure performed on 17 March 2026 at Mankweng Tertiary Hospital. The operation was led by renowned surgeon Professor Tshifularo Nyaweleni, alongside a dedicated multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. The procedure marked a significant medical achievement, highlighting both the skill and commitment of the team involved.
Despite the success of the surgery, baby Kuhlula’s condition deteriorated in the days that followed, ultimately leading to her passing. The loss has underscored the risks and challenges associated with such complex medical interventions, particularly in cases involving conjoined twins.
In the wake of the tragedy, medical experts, in consultation with Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba and Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, recommended that the surviving twin be transferred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital for advanced and specialised care. The transfer was carried out via airlift on Saturday, ensuring that the baby could receive the highest level of medical attention available.
As the funeral service continues, tributes have poured in from both government officials and community members. Limpopo MEC for Health Dieketseng Mashego addressed mourners, offering words of comfort and reflecting on the brief but meaningful life of baby Kuhlula. Her message acknowledged the pain of the family while also recognising the strength they have shown during this difficult time.
The gathering in Lulekani is a reflection of the deep sense of unity and compassion within the community. Residents have come together not only to mourn but also to support the grieving family, standing in solidarity as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
While baby Kuhlula’s life was tragically short, her story has touched many across the country. It has brought attention to the complexities of medical care for rare conditions and highlighted the dedication of healthcare workers striving to save lives under challenging circumstances.
As the community says its final goodbye, there is a shared hope that the surviving twin will continue to receive the care needed to recover and thrive, carrying forward the memory of her sister.
