South African music star Arthur Mafokate is mourning the loss of his father, Enos Mafokate, a respected figure whose contribution to South African equestrian sport broke racial barriers and inspired generations.
Arthur shared the heartbreaking news on Thursday, 3 September 2026, through an official statement from the Mafokate family posted on social media.
The family described Enos as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and mentor, while also honouring his remarkable achievements as a pioneering South African equestrian.
Enos Mafokate is widely remembered as South Africa’s first Black show jumper. His journey in equestrian sport was particularly significant because he pursued the discipline during a period when opportunities for Black South Africans were severely restricted.
Through determination and passion, Enos established himself as a respected horseman and became an inspiration to many young people who followed in his footsteps.
Beyond his achievements in competition, Enos also dedicated himself to developing the sport and opening doors for others. He founded a riding school that helped introduce generations of young South Africans to horse riding and equestrian activities.
His contribution earned him the affectionate title “Kgosi Ya Dipere”, meaning “King of Horses”, reflecting the respect he commanded within the equestrian community.
In announcing his death, the Mafokate family said they were deeply saddened by the loss but remained proud of the life he lived and the legacy he created.
The statement read in part that Enos had been a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor and pioneering South African equestrian.
