A dramatic cash-in-transit (CIT) heist turned parts of Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni into a scene of chaos and confusion after an explosion ripped through a security vehicle, sending cash flying across the streets.
The incident unfolded on the morning of Friday, 24 April 2026, when heavily armed suspects targeted a Fidelity cash van at a set of traffic lights. According to initial reports, more than eight suspects carried out the brazen attack, catching security officers off guard and unleashing a wave of violence that left the area shaken.

Witnesses say the suspects opened fire during the ambush, overpowering the guards before planting explosives on the vehicle. Moments later, a powerful blast tore through the van, scattering debris and large amounts of cash into the surrounding area. The explosion was so intense that it rattled nearby buildings and drew residents out of their homes.
What followed was a chaotic scramble for money. Community members rushed toward the wreckage, grabbing loose banknotes scattered across the road. Some were still in their sleepwear as they hurried to collect as much cash as possible, while others were seen arguing and fighting over it.
In a bold move, the suspects reportedly returned to the scene shortly after the explosion. They removed cash containers from the damaged van and loaded them into getaway vehicles. To maintain control of the situation, they allegedly fired shots into the air, forcing bystanders to retreat before fleeing in different directions.
As news of the heist spread, more people gathered at the scene, creating a volatile environment. Police and security teams arrived and attempted to disperse the growing crowd. Officers fired warning shots and used a stun grenade to try and restore order, but tensions escalated when some individuals began throwing stones at authorities.
Law enforcement later increased their presence, with additional units and aerial support deployed to secure the area and prevent further unrest.
Authorities confirmed that the case is being investigated as a cash-in-transit robbery, along with charges of murder and attempted murder. It is believed the suspects used a BMW to ram the cash van before carrying out the attack and later set the vehicle alight.
Tragically, one person lost their life during the shooting, while three security officers were injured and taken to hospital for medical treatment.
At this stage, no arrests have been made, and the suspects remain at large. Police have urged anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue.
The incident once again highlights the growing boldness of cash-in-transit heists in South Africa, as well as the serious danger these attacks pose to both security personnel and ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire.
