A Cape Town mother has spoken out after her son was allegedly brutally assaulted by members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) during a joint operation in Elsies River, leaving him fighting for his life in hospital.
According to reports, the incident happened during a SANDF and police operation in the troubled Cape Town community, where officers were reportedly conducting anti-gang activities.

The victim, identified as Christino Reyners, is believed to be linked to the notorious 28s prison gang. His family, however, claims he was severely beaten and tortured by soldiers while police officers allegedly stood by and watched without intervening.
His mother described the ordeal as horrifying, claiming her son was assaulted repeatedly during the operation.
Speaking emotionally about the incident, she accused authorities of using excessive force and failing to protect her child’s rights. She also alleged that some police officers nearby appeared unconcerned while the assault unfolded.

Reports indicate that Reyners sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital in critical condition following the alleged attack. The family is now demanding accountability and a full investigation into the conduct of both the soldiers and police officers involved.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, where many South Africans questioned the level of force allegedly used during law enforcement operations in gang-affected communities.
Others argued that authorities are under immense pressure to deal with violent gang activity in parts of the Western Cape, though many insisted that suspects should still be treated within the boundaries of the law.

At this stage, authorities have not publicly confirmed all the allegations made by the family. Investigations into the incident are expected to determine exactly what happened during the operation and whether any officers acted unlawfully.
The SANDF has frequently been deployed alongside police in high-crime areas across the Western Cape as part of efforts to combat gang violence, drug trafficking, and organised crime.
Elsies River remains one of several communities heavily affected by ongoing gang-related violence, with residents often caught between criminal groups and intensified law enforcement operations.
The latest allegations have once again raised concerns about policing methods, human rights, and the relationship between security forces and communities living in violence-stricken areas of Cape Town.
