A tragic accident involving Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi’s official vehicle has left a mother and her baby dead following a devastating series of collisions on the N1 highway near Bela-Bela in Limpopo.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the minister’s state vehicle was involved in the fatal incident on Saturday, 9 May 2026. The accident reportedly occurred after an earlier deadly crash on the same stretch of road triggered chaos and confusion among the victims’ family members.

According to preliminary reports, the first collision involved an off-duty police officer who allegedly struck and killed a man on the N1. The victim’s wife, accompanied by her two children, reportedly attempted to cross the busy highway after learning about the fatal crash involving her husband.
It was during this desperate attempt to reach the scene that tragedy struck for a second time.
Authorities say the woman and her baby, who was strapped to her back, were hit by Dr Motsoaledi’s official vehicle while crossing the road. Both the mother and child died at the scene from their injuries.

SAPS stated that the minister was inside the vehicle at the time of the accident. Officials confirmed that the driver stopped immediately after the collision, following standard procedures, and remained at the scene together with all passengers until emergency services and law enforcement officers arrived.
The heartbreaking incident has shocked many South Africans, especially due to the devastating chain of events that unfolded within a short period on the same highway.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has since launched investigations into both incidents. Two separate culpable homicide cases have reportedly been opened as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collisions.
Police said investigations would examine all factors linked to both crashes, including visibility, road conditions and the sequence of events leading up to the deaths.
SAPS also extended condolences to the grieving family, describing the incident as deeply tragic. Community members and social media users have likewise expressed sadness over the deaths of the mother, father and child in such traumatic circumstances.
The N1 near Bela-Bela has seen several serious accidents in recent months, raising ongoing concerns about road safety on one of South Africa’s busiest highways. Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution, particularly along high-speed routes where crossing on foot can be extremely dangerous.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the emotional and dangerous situations families often face immediately after road accidents, especially when trying to reach injured loved ones on busy highways.
Meanwhile, emergency personnel responded swiftly to secure the scene and assist with traffic management following the collisions. Investigators are expected to interview witnesses and gather further evidence as part of the ongoing probe.
In another recent incident on the N1, two people were killed in a separate collision near Polokwane after two vehicles crashed into each other. One person reportedly sustained serious injuries during that accident and received urgent medical treatment.
As investigations continue, many South Africans are calling for improved road safety awareness and stricter measures to prevent further loss of life on the country’s major highways.
