AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has once again made significant changes to the leadership of the Zulu royal household by removing Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi as the Traditional Prime Minister. The decision marks the second time in less than a year that Buthelezi has been relieved of the influential position.
In his place, the King has appointed Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza, who takes over the role with immediate effect. The announcement was made through an official statement from the King’s office, confirming that Chiliza will serve as the monarch’s principal traditional adviser while overseeing the responsibilities of the Office of the Traditional Prime Minister in support of the AmaZulu Nation and the royal household.
The appointment places Chiliza in one of the most important leadership positions within the Zulu monarchy, where he will be expected to advise the King on traditional matters and help coordinate the administration of the royal office.

Cultural analyst Khaya Ndwandwe believes the transition is unlikely to create instability within the royal household. According to him, Chiliza is already familiar with the responsibilities of the office, having previously served as deputy Traditional Prime Minister under Reverend Buthelezi.
Ndwandwe explained that recent public appearances had already hinted that changes were taking place behind the scenes. He pointed to the opening of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, where Reverend Buthelezi was notably absent while Inkosi Chiliza represented the royal household.
He said this raised questions about whether leadership changes were imminent, making the latest announcement less surprising.
Ndwandwe congratulated Chiliza on his appointment and expressed confidence that his experience would enable him to perform the role effectively. Besides his involvement in traditional leadership, Chiliza also has experience serving in government, giving him a broader understanding of administration and governance.
The analyst added that Reverend Buthelezi had played an important role because of his deep understanding of traditional customs and protocols. However, he does not expect the change in leadership to significantly alter the operations of the royal household, as Chiliza is already well acquainted with its structures and responsibilities.
Ndwandwe also believes the King’s decision would likely have followed consultations with the relevant structures within the Zulu nation, including members of the royal committee and other traditional leadership bodies. While he acknowledged that he could not confirm the extent of those consultations, he said established protocols generally require key stakeholders to be informed before major decisions are announced.
Despite this, he emphasised that under Zulu custom and tradition, the King’s authority remains final. Once the monarch has made a decision, it is expected to be accepted and respected by the royal household and the broader AmaZulu Nation.
The latest leadership reshuffle comes during a period of continued attention on the AmaZulu royal household, with King Misuzulu frequently making headlines over matters involving traditional leadership and royal administration.
As Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza assumes his new responsibilities, many will be watching closely to see how he leads the Office of the Traditional Prime Minister and supports King Misuzulu in guiding the affairs of the AmaZulu Nation.
