Five people have been arrested in Lephalale, Limpopo, after allegedly intimidating a Nigerian businessman, impersonating officials from the Department of Home Affairs, and encouraging violence against foreign nationals.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 58, were taken into custody in Marapong on Monday, 13 July 2026, following an incident that has raised concerns about vigilantism and unlawful actions against migrants living in South Africa.
According to police, the group allegedly approached the Nigerian business owner and ordered him to shut down his business and leave the country. The suspects reportedly claimed they were acting as officials from the Department of Home Affairs, despite having no authority to do so.

Authorities later verified the businessman’s immigration documents and confirmed that he was legally in the country. This contradicted the claims made by the suspects and highlighted that the businessman had not violated any immigration laws.
Police investigations indicate that the group was allegedly mobilising members of the local community against undocumented foreign nationals. While authorities acknowledge ongoing concerns about illegal immigration in some communities, they stressed that members of the public cannot take the law into their own hands or falsely present themselves as government officials.
The arrests come amid heightened tensions in several parts of South Africa, where some communities have demanded stricter enforcement of immigration laws. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly urged residents to report suspected immigration offences to the relevant authorities instead of confronting individuals directly or resorting to intimidation.
Impersonating government officials is a serious offence under South African law. Police have also warned that acts of intimidation, incitement to violence, and harassment can result in criminal prosecution, regardless of the circumstances.
The five accused are expected to appear before the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 July 2026. During their court appearance, they are expected to face charges linked to intimidation and impersonating Home Affairs officials. Additional charges could be considered depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
Police have appealed to communities to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to perform their duties. They encouraged anyone with concerns about undocumented immigrants or criminal activity to report the matter through official channels rather than taking independent action.
The case has drawn attention on social media, where many users have shared differing opinions on immigration and community safety. However, authorities maintain that every individual, regardless of nationality, is entitled to legal protection and that allegations must be handled through the justice system.
Investigations into the incident are continuing, and police have indicated that they will take firm action against anyone found to have broken the law while claiming to act on behalf of government authorities.
