Traffic authorities in Limpopo intercepted a long-distance passenger bus on the N1 near the Mashishing off-ramp in Polokwane after it was found to be severely overloaded during a routine road safety inspection.
The bus, which was travelling from Malawi to Johannesburg, raised immediate concern when officials discovered that it was carrying significantly more passengers than it was legally permitted to transport. According to authorities, the vehicle is licensed to carry a maximum of 70 passengers. However, upon inspection, officers found that approximately 90 people were on board at the time of the stop.
This meant the bus was exceeding its legal capacity by around 20 passengers, a violation that poses serious safety risks, particularly on long-distance routes. Overloading can compromise vehicle stability, increase braking distance, and place passengers at greater risk in the event of an accident or emergency.
Further investigations at the scene revealed an additional discrepancy involving passenger records. While the bus was physically carrying about 90 people, official documentation reportedly reflected only 25 passengers. This inconsistency has raised further concerns about compliance with transport regulations and the accuracy of passenger manifests used in cross-border travel operations.
Due to the seriousness of the findings, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and immigration officials were called to the scene to assist with the investigation. Authorities are working to determine whether proper procedures were followed at border entry points and whether any regulations governing passenger transport between Malawi and South Africa may have been violated.
Officials have indicated that the matter is being treated as both a road safety and regulatory compliance issue. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, possible consequences could include fines, suspension of operating permits, or further legal action against those responsible for the transport operation.
