A Krugersdorp father is enduring unimaginable heartbreak after both of his young sons died on the same day, just hours apart, leaving the family shattered and struggling to comprehend the sudden loss.
Johan Barnard, from Gauteng, lost his eight-year-old son Dean and his two-week-old baby LJ after both children were admitted to separate hospitals due to severe illness. What began as a desperate fight for their lives quickly turned into an unbearable tragedy that unfolded within hours.

Speaking about the devastating experience, Barnard said he is struggling to find words for the pain he is feeling, describing it as a grief unlike anything he has ever known. He said the past few days have been filled with constant tears, shock, and disbelief as he tries to process the loss of both children at once.
According to Barnard, both boys were born with a rare heart condition known as Shone’s complex. Despite their health challenges, the family remained hopeful and did everything possible to support their treatment and recovery. However, both children recently developed a serious lung infection, which led to their hospitalisation.
Barnard explained that the situation worsened rapidly. Baby LJ was the first to be rushed to hospital after his condition suddenly declined. Doctors later informed the family that the infant had gone without oxygen for too long and his chances of survival were extremely low. While the family was still trying to absorb this devastating news, Dean’s condition also began to deteriorate in another hospital.
In a heartbreaking sequence of events, Barnard said he moved between hospitals, holding onto hope that at least one of his sons would recover. However, while he was en route, baby LJ passed away. Shortly afterwards, Dean also died despite medical efforts to save him.
He described the moment as life-altering, saying it still does not feel real. “It still needs to sink in,” he said, adding that both boys were deeply loved and brought immense joy to the family despite their ongoing medical struggles.
Family members, friends, and the children’s school community have since paid tribute to Dean, remembering him as a cheerful, energetic boy who always had a smile on his face. Teachers described him as a kind learner who brightened every classroom he entered, even though he spent much of his young life in and out of hospital.
His mother also shared emotional memories, describing him as a happy child who remained strong despite his illness and never allowed it to define him.
Barnard said the bond between his two sons was special, even in their short lives, and that they brought great joy to the family. As they begin the painful process of grieving, he said he is trying to hold on to the memories of both boys and the love they shared.
The family now faces the difficult journey of healing after a loss that has left an entire community in mourning.
