Lebogang Morula, a respected former midfielder for Jomo Cosmos and Bafana Bafana, was laid to rest on Saturday, August 17, at Mmakau Cemetery in North West. The 56-year-old football icon was honored in a deeply emotional ceremony, with numerous former players, including many of his teammates from Jomo Cosmos, attending to pay their final respects.
The funeral service was held at Ramogodi Hall in Mmakau, where friends, family, and former colleagues gathered to celebrate Morula’s life. Those who knew him spoke fondly of his warm and humble nature, recalling a man who not only excelled on the football field but also cared deeply for those around him.
During the service, Nono Sekwele, Morula’s sister, expressed the profound sadness that has gripped the family since his passing. “This is an incredibly difficult and painful time for us,” she shared. “God knows all. What happened to my brother is heartbreaking. He was fit and healthy. This pain is overwhelming.”
Morula’s impact on South African football was highlighted by several of his former teammates. Collen Tlemo, the former captain of Jomo Cosmos, reflected on Morula’s significant contributions to the sport. “He was our hero,” Tlemo remarked. “Lebogang was a key part of our first FIFA World Cup squad in 1998 in France. It was no small feat to make the national team back then, but he did it. He represented South Africa on the world stage—he was our ambassador.”
Tebogo Mophaleng, another former Cosmos player, also paid tribute to Morula, emphasizing his leadership qualities. “We have lost a great man,” Mophaleng said. “But let’s not lose hope. We must continue his legacy. His spirit will always be with us.”
The funeral was a poignant reminder of the significant role Morula played both on and off the field. His dedication to the sport and his kindness towards others left a lasting impact on those who knew him. As mourners said their final goodbyes, it was clear that Lebogang Morula’s memory will continue to inspire and resonate within the South African football community for years to come.
