Prison learners across South Africa have shattered expectations by achieving an impressive 96% pass rate in their matric exams, demonstrating that education can flourish even in the most challenging environments.
Among the 171 inmates who took the exams at 17 correctional services schools, 104 obtained results qualifying them for university admission. These accomplishments highlight the transformative power of education, even within the confines of prison walls.

At a special awards ceremony held at Johannesburg Prison, Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald lauded the learners’ achievements.
“Matriculants, know that you have contributed to building the nation. You are contributing to a better South Africa,” Groenewald said.
He encouraged the successful inmates to continue striving for excellence beyond the prison system. “You took up the pen to write an exam and succeeded. Now, you must take up the pen to create a brighter future for yourselves when you leave our facilities,” he added.

Thirteen of the prison schools achieved perfect 100% pass rates, contributing to a 3% improvement in the overall pass rate compared to the previous year. These outcomes reflect the combined efforts of the learners and the educators who have guided them throughout their academic journey.
Groenewald also acknowledged the critical role of family support. Speaking to families at the ceremony, he emphasized the importance of maintaining connections with incarcerated loved ones, saying, “Prison is a lonely place. Your support can make a world of difference in their journey.”
