The Citrusdal community is mourning the heartbreaking death of 10-year-old Kendrick Titus, a Grade 4 learner who tragically drowned in the Olifants River on Saturday afternoon.
Kendrick was reportedly swimming with two friends at an area they regularly visited when the tragedy occurred. According to his father, Nigel Beukes, the young boy stepped onto soft sand while in the water. He suddenly sank into what was described as a deep water hole, leaving his friends unable to rescue him.
The incident has left Kendrick’s family, friends, classmates and the wider Citrusdal community devastated as they come to terms with the sudden loss of a young life filled with promise.
Police have since opened a judicial inquest into the circumstances surrounding the drowning. A diving unit was called to the scene and later recovered Kendrick’s body from the river on the same day.
For his loved ones, the tragedy is made even more painful by the memories of the vibrant and caring child they have lost. Kendrick was remembered by his father and those who knew him as a friendly, respectful and helpful boy.
He was reportedly someone who made an effort to greet people and was known for bringing happiness to those around him. His ability to make others laugh was among the qualities that made him special to his family and friends.
Kendrick also had dreams for his future. The Grade 4 learner hoped to one day become a diesel mechanic and work in the mining industry. His ambition reflected the hopes and aspirations of a young child who still had so much of life ahead of him.
His untimely death has therefore left a painful void for those who watched him grow and looked forward to seeing him achieve his dreams.
Citrusdal Primary School has also expressed its sorrow following Kendrick’s passing. The school community has been deeply affected by the sudden death of one of its learners, with teachers and fellow pupils now facing the difficult task of continuing without him.
The loss serves as another painful reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can turn into tragedy, particularly around rivers and other bodies of water. Kendrick had reportedly visited the area before, making the incident all the more devastating for his family.
