In a powerful story of perseverance and determination, 31-year-old Slindile Cele from KwaZulu-Natal has become an inspiration to many after finally completing her matric with a bachelor’s pass. Slindile, who originally failed matric in 2006, defied all odds and re-enrolled at her local high school to pursue her dream of education—this time as an adult learner.

Unlike many who choose adult matric programs or distance learning options, Slindile made the bold decision to physically return to Mzingwezi High School in 2020. She started by repeating Grade 11 and then completed her matric in 2021, proudly earning a bachelor’s pass—an achievement that allows entry into university-level studies.

Her journey was far from easy. Slindile faced significant challenges, including being much older than her classmates and even older than some of her teachers. She was frequently mocked by students and faced criticism from those around her. “I was a laughing stock at school. It was painful, but I knew how pupils are,” she told Daily Sun. “I told myself I must respect them and focus on my goal.”

In addition to these emotional and social challenges, Slindile had practical obstacles to overcome. In 2016, she worked as a domestic helper, saving every rand she could to afford school fees, uniforms, and stationery. Her plans were delayed when she fell pregnant, giving birth to her daughter in August 2020. Despite the setback, she refused to give up.

Balancing motherhood and studies proved difficult. While attending school full-time, she relied on a crèche to care for her child during the day. Financial struggles persisted, as she had to use her child’s support grant to pay rent, often going to bed without food. “My baby daddy was not supportive,” she shared. “Sometimes I went to sleep without food.”

Through all of this, Slindile never lost sight of her goal. Her determination carried her through the most difficult times, and in the end, her hard work paid off. She not only passed matric but did so with a bachelor’s pass—qualifying her for further studies at a tertiary institution.

Now, with matric behind her, Slindile is setting her sights on a new dream: becoming a nurse. Her story is not only one of personal triumph but also a powerful reminder that age, circumstances, and past failures do not define a person’s future.

“All those that were laughing have been silenced,” she said, reflecting on the criticism and ridicule she endured throughout her journey.

Slindile Cele’s journey is a shining example of resilience and the belief that it’s never too late to rewrite your story. For many South Africans and others around the world, her success serves as motivation to chase long-lost dreams—regardless of age or obstacles.
