A shocking and tragic discovery has brought a devastating end to the search for a missing businessman in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, after human remains believed to be his were found inside a crocodile in the Komati River.
The grim find was made on Saturday, 2 May 2026, following an extensive search operation that lasted several days. Authorities had been looking for the 59-year-old man since Tuesday, 28 April, when his vehicle was discovered lodged at a low-lying bridge in the river. It is believed he attempted to cross the bridge during heavy flooding when the vehicle was swept away by powerful currents.

The Komati River, which runs through parts of Mpumalanga toward Mozambique, is known to become extremely dangerous during periods of heavy rainfall. Rising water levels and fast-moving currents can quickly turn low-water crossings into deadly traps. In addition to the hazardous conditions, the river is home to crocodiles and other wildlife, further complicating rescue efforts.
Search teams, including members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Search and Rescue Unit, emergency responders, and environmental officials, worked tirelessly to locate the missing man. However, the operation proved to be extremely challenging due to the swollen river and frequent sightings of crocodiles in the area.
During the search, authorities identified a crocodile suspected to be linked to the incident. After receiving the necessary approvals, the animal was euthanised. It was during a subsequent examination that investigators made the horrifying discovery of human remains inside the crocodile.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the remains were recovered during the procedure. He stated that forensic processes, including DNA testing, will be conducted to formally identify the remains and confirm whether they belong to the missing businessman.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of attempting to cross flooded roads and bridges. Low-water bridges, in particular, can be deceptive, as water levels and current strength are often underestimated by motorists. Authorities have urged drivers to avoid taking unnecessary risks and to heed warnings during severe weather conditions.
Komatipoort, situated near the borders of Mozambique and Eswatini, is known for its natural beauty and proximity to the Kruger National Park. However, the presence of wild animals in nearby rivers serves as a constant reminder of the potential dangers in the region.
As investigations continue, the tragic case has left the local community in shock and mourning. Families and residents have been reminded of the unpredictable power of nature and the importance of prioritising safety, especially during extreme weather events.
This heartbreaking incident stands as a sobering warning about the risks posed by flooded rivers and the hidden dangers that may lie beneath their surface.
