Severe Downpour Causes Widespread Damage

Durban faced another bout of extreme weather on Sunday, March 2, as Level 5 heavy rains battered the city. The intense rainfall led to severe flooding, rendering roads impassable and causing significant damage to infrastructure. Among the affected areas was Wentworth Cemetery, where several tombstones were destroyed by the relentless downpour.

Flooded Roads and Stranded Motorists

One of the most alarming incidents occurred at Quarry Road, where a man was left stranded on top of his flooded car, helpless as the water levels rose around him. This latest storm follows the tragic loss of six lives in Lamontville earlier in the week due to similar weather conditions. The heavy rains have once again highlighted the vulnerability of Durban’s infrastructure to extreme weather events.

Disaster Management Teams on High Alert

In response to the crisis, the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Department has mobilized disaster management teams to assist affected residents. Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has urged those living in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency response teams are actively monitoring the situation and providing assistance where needed.

Ongoing Weather Warnings

The South African Weather Service has issued further warnings, predicting continued severe thunderstorms in eThekwini and surrounding municipalities. Authorities are closely monitoring the weather conditions and have advised residents to remain vigilant.

As the city grapples with the aftermath of the storm, residents are urged to take precautionary measures and stay informed about further developments.
