A devastating road accident along Zimbabwe’s busy Harare–Nyamapanda Highway has claimed the lives of at least 14 people, leaving several others injured and shocking communities across the region.
The fatal crash happened on Tuesday afternoon near the 176-kilometre peg close to Suswe. According to reports from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the accident involved a long-distance BRD Luxury Coach that was travelling from Cape Town in South Africa to Malawi.
Authorities confirmed that the bus was carrying 63 passengers at the time of the accident. Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after the crash was reported, where they discovered multiple victims trapped inside the damaged coach.
Police spokespersons said 14 people were declared dead at the scene, while many others sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. There are concerns that the death toll could still rise as some passengers remain in serious condition in hospital.
Injured survivors were transported to nearby health facilities, including Mutoko District Hospital and Kotwa District Hospital, where medical teams worked urgently to provide treatment. Witnesses described scenes of panic and heartbreak as rescue workers tried to assist passengers and recover bodies from the wreckage.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the accident. However, investigations are currently underway to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly crash. Traffic investigators and police officials remained at the scene for several hours gathering evidence and speaking to survivors.
The Harare–Nyamapanda Road is one of Zimbabwe’s major transport routes and is heavily used by cross-border buses, trucks, and private vehicles travelling between neighbouring countries. Due to the high volume of traffic, the highway has seen numerous serious accidents over the years, prompting ongoing concerns about road safety.
Road safety activists have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved vehicle inspections, and stronger monitoring of long-distance drivers to reduce accidents on major highways. Driver fatigue, speeding, and poor vehicle maintenance are often cited as some of the major causes of deadly crashes involving public transport vehicles.
This latest tragedy has once again raised questions about the safety of long-distance travel in the region. Families of passengers have been left devastated as they wait for information about their loved ones.
