A heartbreaking story of a teenage boy struggling to survive has touched thousands of South Africans, with many calling for urgent assistance after seeing the harsh conditions he and his family endure every day.
The young boy first came to public attention when well-known philanthropist BI Phakathi met him while he was trying to sell a scrap tyre so he could buy a loaf of bread. Moved by the teenager’s determination, Phakathi gave him money for food, and the emotional encounter quickly spread across social media, inspiring countless reactions.

A few days later, BI Phakathi and his team returned to the same location to check on the boy. Sadly, they found him once again searching through piles of scrap metal and rubbish, hoping to collect enough recyclable material to earn a few rand.
The teenager explained that this had become part of his daily life. Every piece of metal or discarded item he finds can be exchanged at a recycling centre for a small amount of money, which helps him and his family survive.
During the conversation, the young boy revealed that he does not attend a mainstream school. Instead, he studies at a trade school where he is learning practical skills that he hopes will one day help him build a better future.

The teenager also shared more of his painful childhood. He said he spent nine years living in an orphanage before eventually leaving. Afterwards, he experienced homelessness and had to survive on his own for several years.
According to the boy, he began searching through rubbish bins for recyclable materials when he was just 10 years old in order to find enough money for food.
Deeply moved by what they witnessed, BI Phakathi and his team provided the family with immediate assistance during their visit. They have also launched a fundraising campaign aimed at helping the family move into a safer home with a proper roof, electricity and running water.
