An off-duty metro police officer has been hailed as a hero after losing his life while trying to assist at a crash scene on the N12 East, in a tragedy that has left his family, colleagues, and community in deep mourning.
Masilo Moseamedi, a member of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), died after being struck by a speeding vehicle while helping at an accident near the Putfontein off-ramp. The incident occurred after he rushed to the scene where a relative’s car had overturned in a multi-vehicle collision.

According to reports, the area was dark and chaotic, with several vehicles involved in the crash. Despite being off duty, Moseamedi immediately stepped in to assist, attempting to manage traffic and prevent further danger to other motorists. His actions reflected his dedication to public safety and his commitment to serving others, even outside of official working hours.
Tragically, while trying to control the situation, he was hit by an oncoming speeding car. The impact proved fatal, and he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.

Family members have shared the heartbreaking details of his final moments. His uncle, James Moseamedi, explained that the officer’s wife was nearby when the tragedy occurred. She reportedly heard a loud noise but did not immediately realise that her husband had been struck. When he did not return, she went to search for him and made the devastating discovery.
The emotional toll on the family has been severe, with relatives describing the loss as overwhelming. Moseamedi’s wife, in particular, has been struggling to cope with the sudden and traumatic loss of her husband.

In honour of his life and service, fellow EMPD officers held a memorial service and a solemn march-past in Payneville, Springs, on Wednesday, 22 April 2026. Colleagues described him as a hardworking, committed officer who took pride in his role and responsibilities.
During the ceremony, officers stood in formation to pay their respects, reflecting the deep sense of loss felt within the department. Family members were also present, visibly emotional as they remembered a man they described as dedicated and dependable.
Moseamedi’s uncle said the family had always been proud of his achievements, especially his career in law enforcement. His death has left a void that will be difficult to fill, both at home and within the policing community.
Authorities have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by emergency responders and law enforcement officers, even when they are off duty. Moseamedi’s bravery and willingness to act in a moment of crisis have left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
He is remembered not only as an officer but as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to protect others.
