KANANA, North West – Families of victims are demanding justice following a devastating tavern shooting in Kanana, near Orkney, that left four people dead, including a teenage girl, and several others injured.
The attack took place on Saturday night, 30 May 2026, at Maseretse Tavern in Section Z, where unknown gunmen opened fire on patrons before fleeing the scene. The incident has once again highlighted the rising concern over violent crime in taverns across South Africa.
According to police reports, the attackers—believed to be three armed men wearing face coverings—stormed into the tavern and began shooting randomly at people inside and near the entrance. Panic erupted as patrons tried to escape the hail of bullets, with many running for safety in different directions.

Among the victims was a 15-year-old girl who tragically lost her life during the shooting. She was reportedly struck by gunfire near the entrance of the tavern. Three other victims, all adult men from Lesotho aged between 30 and 36, were also killed in the attack.
Two women, aged 30 and 45, were injured during the shooting and were rushed to hospital for medical treatment. Their condition has not yet been fully disclosed.
North West police confirmed that murder and attempted murder cases have been opened. Investigations are currently underway, but no arrests have been made so far. Authorities say they are working to establish the motive behind the attack and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in tracking down the suspects.
The brutal killings have left the Kanana community in shock and mourning. Residents say they are living in fear as tavern shootings continue to claim lives in the area. Families of the deceased have expressed deep pain and frustration, calling on law enforcement to act swiftly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Community members gathered outside the scene shortly after the incident, lighting candles and comforting grieving relatives. Many described the attack as senseless and heartbreaking, especially due to the loss of a young teenager whose life was cut short.
Local leaders have also condemned the violence, urging stronger policing and community cooperation to curb the increasing incidents of gun-related crime. They say repeated shootings in the area are creating a climate of fear and instability.
This latest tragedy is part of a worrying pattern of tavern-related shootings in the North West province, where several mass shootings have been reported in recent months. Residents are now calling for urgent government intervention to address illegal firearms and improve safety in public drinking establishments.
As investigations continue, families are left to mourn their loved ones while hoping for justice in a case that has once again shaken the nation.
