Five people lost their lives in a devastating road accident after an overloaded Toyota Quantum minibus taxi overturned on the N1–26 Lunds route in Limpopo’s Capricorn District during the early hours of Sunday, 11 January 2026. The tragedy has once again highlighted the deadly consequences of overloading vehicles and neglecting basic road safety regulations.
According to reports, the crash occurred at approximately 2:21am while the minibus was travelling along the busy route. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after the accident was reported, where they were met with a horrific sight. The Toyota Quantum, which is designed to carry far fewer passengers, was transporting an alarming 27 people at the time of the crash.

Preliminary information suggests that a tyre burst caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Due to the excessive load, the driver was unable to regain control, resulting in the minibus overturning on the road. The impact was severe, leaving passengers trapped inside the wreckage while others were thrown from the vehicle.
Departmental spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala confirmed that five passengers died instantly at the scene. The deceased included three women and two men. “Sadly, five passengers were killed on the scene. The driver and 11 other passengers sustained minor injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment,” Taueatsoala said. Several other passengers were treated for shock at the scene.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Limpopo community, particularly among families who lost loved ones in the crash. Limpopo MEC for Transport Violet Mathye expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended her condolences to the bereaved families. “Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. We also wish the injured passengers a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected,” Mathye said.
The MEC further reiterated the department’s commitment to improving road safety in the province, especially during late-night and early-morning travel when fatigue and poor visibility often contribute to accidents. She emphasized that reckless behaviour, including vehicle overloading and failure to conduct proper vehicle inspections, continues to cost innocent lives.
Following the accident, the Department of Transport once again urged drivers and vehicle operators to prioritise safety by ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on trips. Motorists were also warned against overloading vehicles, a practice that significantly increases the risk of tyre bursts, brake failure, and loss of control.
Authorities have indicated that investigations into the crash are ongoing, and further action may be taken once all the facts have been established. Law enforcement officials are also expected to intensify roadblocks and compliance checks in an effort to curb reckless driving and enforce traffic laws.
As South Africa continues to grapple with high numbers of road fatalities, this tragic incident serves as a painful reminder of the importance of responsible driving and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
