A shocking daylight shooting outside the Blue Valley Golf Estate in Midrand has left two men dead and two others injured, sparking renewed concerns about escalating violent crime and possible organised criminal activity in the area.
According to preliminary reports, the incident unfolded when a group of four men were travelling in a Toyota vehicle near the high-security estate. It is alleged that they were suddenly ambushed by two armed suspects who arrived on motorbikes. The attackers are said to have opened fire without warning, discharging more than ten shots at the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the area following reports of gunfire. On arrival, paramedics found multiple victims with gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save them, two of the men were declared dead at the scene, while the remaining two were rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Their conditions have not yet been officially confirmed.

One of the deceased has been identified as well-known DJ Oscar Nyathi, popularly known in the music scene as “Oscar Baxx” from the group Malumz on Decks. His death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with fans and fellow artists expressing disbelief and grief on social media.
The identity of the second deceased victim has not been fully disclosed to the public, but early reports suggest he may have been linked to ongoing investigations involving illegal mining operations and cash-in-transit robbery networks. Authorities have not yet confirmed these claims.
In the aftermath of the shooting, speculation has grown regarding the possible motive behind the attack. Some unverified reports suggest that one of the victims may have had alleged connections to an individual associated with the so-called “Big 5” cartel, a group frequently mentioned in discussions around organised crime in South Africa. However, police have not confirmed any gang affiliations and have urged the public to avoid spreading speculation while investigations are ongoing.

Law enforcement officials have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. Forensic teams combed the scene for ballistic evidence, while detectives began gathering witness statements and reviewing possible surveillance footage from the surrounding area. No arrests have been made at this stage, and the suspects remain at large.
Authorities have described the attack as highly coordinated, raising concerns that it may have been a targeted hit rather than a random act of violence. The use of motorbikes in the ambush has also drawn attention, as it suggests a level of planning and mobility designed to ensure a quick escape.
Community members in Midrand have expressed alarm over the brazenness of the attack, particularly given its proximity to a high-security residential estate. Calls for increased police visibility and stronger action against organised crime have intensified in the wake of the incident.
As investigations continue, police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the entertainment and local communities mourn the loss of DJ Oscar Nyathi, whose rising profile in the music industry has now been cut short in tragic circumstances.
