The tragic death of 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi during Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe has sparked an emotional debate within the community, with his family calling for justice while allegations about his behaviour before the fatal incident continue to circulate on social media.
Nyathi was fatally stabbed on 1 September 2026 during celebrations that involved people splashing one another with water. Police confirmed that a 53-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder. The circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain under investigation.
Following the incident, social-media users claiming to have known Nyathi began sharing accounts about his alleged conduct. These claims have not been independently verified, and they should be treated as allegations rather than established facts.
According to posts seen by Mamelodi News, one neighbour alleged that Nyathi was frequently disrespectful towards members of his family and people in the surrounding community. The neighbour suggested that several residents who knew the family might have similar stories about his alleged behaviour.
A former teacher also reportedly shared allegations about Nyathi’s conduct at school. The teacher claimed that Nyathi had previously behaved disrespectfully towards educators and allegedly intimidated members of staff. The teacher further alleged that Nyathi once carried a knife at school and displayed it in front of a teacher.
Allegations Involving a Pregnant Woman
Further claims have emerged concerning an alleged incident involving a pregnant woman during a previous Spring Day celebration.
According to information shared with Mamelodi News, the woman was allegedly splashed with dirty water during the celebrations. It is claimed that she subsequently approached Nyathi’s mother to complain about what had happened.
The woman allegedly received a response that Spring Day involved children throwing water at one another and that she should deal with the incident. Another neighbour reportedly claimed that Nyathi and a friend had previously poured dirty, muddy water on a pregnant woman, allegedly leaving her embarrassed and distressed.
These accounts remain allegations and have not been independently confirmed.
The fact that the 53-year-old suspect was reportedly a neighbour has added another layer to the controversy. Some residents claim there had been tension between Nyathi and the neighbour before the fatal Spring Day incident.
The tragedy has left the community divided. Some people believe that young people participating in Spring Day celebrations should have shown greater consideration towards older residents and avoided involving people who did not want to participate.
