A South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier was injured during a tense border security operation after being stabbed in the forearm while defending himself against an undocumented migrant. The incident occurred on 26 December 2025, when SANDF troops intercepted a large group of undocumented Zimbabwean nationals attempting to cross into South Africa illegally.

According to SANDF spokesperson Captain Moses Semono, members of the 1 South African Tank Regiment were deployed to conduct routine border safeguarding duties when they encountered an unusually large influx of undocumented individuals. In total, 1,174 undocumented Zimbabweans were intercepted at several illegal border crossing points, making it one of the biggest such operations recorded during the festive season.
Captain Semono explained that the situation was particularly challenging due to the unexpected aggressiveness displayed by some of the individuals involved. “This was the first time our troops had to manage such a massive influx of undocumented migrants during the festive period,” he said. “Compounding the situation was the uncharacteristic aggressiveness of the individuals involved.”

During the operation, Rifleman T.M. Mokoena sustained a stab wound to his forearm while attempting to defend himself against one of the undocumented persons who allegedly launched a life-threatening attack. Despite the danger, the soldier demonstrated remarkable restraint and professionalism.
“Rifleman Mokoena was able to thwart the danger and neutralise the threat without resorting to deadly force,” Captain Semono said. “This is a clear indication of the high standard of training provided by the South African National Defence Force.”
Following the incident, Defence Intelligence Services took over the matter for further investigation and processing. SANDF medics, who were on standby as part of standard operational procedures, immediately attended to Rifleman Mokoena. He received prompt medical treatment for his injuries and is reported to be in stable condition.
Captain Semono reassured the public that all undocumented individuals intercepted during the operation were handled in accordance with the law and human rights standards. “The undocumented persons were handed over to the South African Immigration Services in good health and without injury,” he confirmed.
The SANDF has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding South Africa’s borders while maintaining professionalism and respect for human life, even under highly volatile conditions. The operation highlighted the growing pressure faced by security forces amid ongoing challenges related to illegal border crossings, particularly during peak travel periods such as the festive season.
Colonel Dikgabane Herold Tladi, Officer Commanding Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, praised the soldiers involved for their discipline and restraint in managing a potentially deadly situation. He also expressed his support for the injured soldier, wishing Rifleman Mokoena a speedy and full recovery.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers faced daily by SANDF members deployed along South Africa’s borders, as they work to maintain national security under increasingly complex and risky circumstances.
