Family Fishing Trip Turns Into a Nightmare
A seven-year-old boy, Johandré Blom, is currently fighting for his life in intensive care after being viciously attacked by a crocodile during a family fishing trip. The horrific incident occurred last Friday afternoon at the Emanzini Fishing Resort, located at Roodekopjes Dam near Brits.
Johandré was playing in shallow water with his friend Dylan, just a few meters from where their fathers were fishing. What started as a fun and carefree moment quickly turned into a life-threatening situation when a crocodile suddenly emerged from the water and grabbed Johandré.
Heroic Rescue Efforts
Dylan, witnessing the terrifying attack, immediately screamed for help and bravely tried to pull his friend away from the predator’s jaws. Johandré’s father, Corné Blom, responded instantly and jumped into the water to rescue his son. In a desperate struggle, Corné managed to wrestle Johandré free from the crocodile’s grip.
However, the attack left devastating injuries. During the struggle, Johandré’s left arm was torn off by the powerful reptile. Despite the horrific injury, Corné’s quick action prevented the tragedy from becoming worse.
Rushed to Hospital and Placed in Induced Coma
After the rescue, the family rushed Johandré to the nearest medical facility in Brits, where emergency responders stabilized him. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted to a specialized hospital in Alberton for further treatment.
Doctors placed Johandré in an induced coma to help his body recover from the trauma. According to reports, he remains in critical but stable condition, with medical teams closely monitoring his recovery around the clock.
A Long Road to Recovery
Johandré’s family now faces not only the emotional trauma of the incident but also the heavy financial burden of his long-term medical care. His recovery is expected to be a lengthy and challenging journey, involving multiple surgeries, rehabilitation, and specialized treatments.
To support the family, a close friend, Juan van der Merwe, created a fundraising campaign on BackaBuddy. The goal is to raise R1 million to cover medical expenses, hospital fees, and future rehabilitation costs.
“All funds raised will go directly to Johandré’s care. The family is overwhelmed but grateful for the support and prayers from the community,” Juan shared.
How You Can Help
The family is appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone willing to contribute can donate through the BackaBuddy platform to help ease the financial strain on the Blom family during this difficult time.
This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking in natural water bodies, especially in areas known to be home to crocodiles. It also highlights the bravery and quick thinking of a father who risked everything to save his child.
