South African rapper Shebeshxt, whose real name is Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, is now facing a culpable homicide charge following the tragic vehicle accident that claimed the life of his young daughter, Onthatile Chuene, in June 2024.
The new charge was officially presented during a pre-trial hearing held at the Polokwane Regional Court this week. Prosecutors have also charged the musician with reckless driving in relation to the same incident, marking a major development in a case that has attracted significant public interest across South Africa.
The fatal collision occurred on 8 June 2024 along the R37 road near Smelters in Limpopo. According to information presented before the court, Onthatile Chuene died at the scene of the accident after the vehicle was involved in a serious crash. The heartbreaking incident shocked fans and members of the public, many of whom expressed sympathy for the grieving family.

Shebeshxt himself suffered severe injuries during the collision. During his latest court appearance, he informed the court that he is still receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. The rapper remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
The culpable homicide and reckless driving charges are the latest additions to the legal challenges facing the artist. He is already standing trial in a separate road rage case involving several serious allegations. Those charges include attempted murder, assault, malicious damage to property, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
While the two matters are unrelated, they have placed the popular Limpopo musician under intense public scrutiny. His legal team is expected to respond to the latest charges as the case progresses through the courts.
During this week’s proceedings, the court postponed the matter until 10 September to allow prosecutors additional time to complete their preparations and finalize the state’s case. The next hearing is expected to focus on further pre-trial processes before the matter eventually proceeds to trial.

The addition of a culpable homicide charge is considered a significant step in the investigation into the fatal crash. In South African law, culpable homicide refers to the unlawful and negligent killing of another person. The court will ultimately determine whether the evidence presented proves negligence beyond the required legal standard.
Since the accident, the loss of Onthatile Chuene has remained one of the most heartbreaking moments in Shebeshxt’s personal life. The tragedy prompted an outpouring of condolences from supporters and fellow artists, many of whom shared messages of comfort with the musician and his family.
As the legal process continues, the case remains closely followed by the public. Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing, and the court will determine the outcome based on the evidence presented during the upcoming proceedings.
The case is scheduled to return to the Polokwane Regional Court on 10 September for further pre-trial hearings.
