Kelsey-Jay Meyrick from IPSS Medical Rescue reported that paramedics were dispatched following the incident. Upon their arrival, it was confirmed that two vehicles had collided head-on. The impact was severe, causing significant damage to both vehicles and their occupants.
“Reports from the scene indicate that one person sustained critical injuries, while five others suffered injuries ranging from serious to moderate,” Meyrick said. She further explained that despite the immediate medical response, five people were declared dead at the scene due to the extent of their injuries. Tragically, the sixth victim succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at the hospital.
Emergency medical teams worked swiftly to stabilize the injured at the scene. Those with serious and moderate injuries were transported to nearby hospitals, where they continue to receive medical care under the supervision of advanced life support paramedics.
While the exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, the incident has once again highlighted the dangers of high-speed travel on South Africa’s roads. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution, particularly on highways known for high traffic volumes and speeding vehicles.
