In a shocking incident that has left the Soshanguve community in northern Pretoria devastated, six suspects have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of five community patrollers. The patrollers, who were members of the local Community Policing Forum (CPF), were attacked while conducting their regular patrols in the early hours of Saturday at the Marry Me informal settlement.
According to reports from Saam Sokolo Security, a private company working closely with the CPF, the attack also left seven other people injured. The wounded individuals are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby health facilities, as the community grapples with the horror of the event.
The CEO of Saam Sokolo Security, Kgothatso Ramautswa, confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations are ongoing. “We are engaging with the community to get accurate information because the suspects are known troublemakers in the area,” Ramautswa explained. He further added that their team is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure all those involved are apprehended.
“Our security personnel are on the ground daily, assisting the police in tracking down the perpetrators,” said Ramautswa. “The investigation is progressing, and the police have already made six arrests. Additionally, we received information about the vehicle used during the attack, and efforts are underway to locate it.”
The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this stage, but residents have expressed fear and anger over the growing violence in the community. Community members believe that criminal gangs operating in the area may be responsible for the killings, targeting patrollers who work tirelessly to keep the streets safe.
The Marry Me informal settlement, like many other communities in Soshanguve, relies heavily on the efforts of CPF members and community patrollers who risk their lives to protect residents from crime. The CPF plays a crucial role in assisting the police by reporting criminal activities and maintaining a visible presence in crime-prone areas.
However, this tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers these patrollers face, often with limited resources and little protection. Local leaders have called for better support and protection for CPF members, including proper equipment, training, and stronger cooperation from the police to prevent such tragedies.
Soshanguve residents have since gathered to mourn the loss of the five patrollers, describing them as brave individuals who dedicated their lives to serving the community. Many expressed hope that the arrests will lead to justice and serve as a warning to others who might target community safety initiatives.
Meanwhile, police have urged anyone with additional information about the attack or the suspects still at large to come forward. Authorities assured the public that they are committed to thoroughly investigating the case and ensuring those responsible face the full might of the law.
The incident has sparked a renewed conversation about crime, safety, and the challenges faced by community patrollers in South Africa’s informal settlements. As the investigation continues, the Soshanguve community is left grappling with grief, anger, and a desperate demand for justice.
