A wave of shock and grief has swept through the Umlazi community following a brutal attack that claimed the life of a teenage pupil and left two others seriously injured. The incident, which reportedly occurred on Friday, 24 April 2026, has intensified concerns about the safety of schoolchildren and the growing problem of extortion in local communities.
According to early and unconfirmed reports, three pupils from Menzi High School were selling sweets along Maponya Road in the N Section of Umlazi. For many young people, informal trading like this is a common way to earn extra money or help support their families amid difficult economic conditions.

Witnesses allege that the situation took a violent turn when a group of men approached the pupils and demanded a so-called “protection fee” in exchange for allowing them to continue selling in the area. Such incidents are believed to be part of a broader pattern of extortion affecting informal traders in various communities.
It is understood that the pupils refused to comply with the demands. What started as a confrontation quickly escalated into violence, with the suspects reportedly becoming aggressive and drawing weapons during the altercation.
Tragically, one of the pupils, a 19-year-old, sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. His death has left classmates, teachers, and community members devastated, as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of a young life full of potential.
The two other pupils, aged 17 and 19, were also injured during the attack. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the injured teenagers to hospital, where they remain under medical care. Although their exact conditions have not been officially confirmed, it is believed that both suffered serious injuries.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that authorities have opened a case of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Police have since launched a manhunt for those responsible, but no arrests have been made so far. Investigations are ongoing as law enforcement works to gather evidence and track down the suspects.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in Umlazi, with residents calling for urgent action to address crime and protect vulnerable members of the community. Many have expressed anger over the targeting of schoolchildren, describing the attack as both senseless and deeply disturbing.
Parents and educators have also raised alarm about the risks faced by pupils who engage in small-scale trading. For some learners, selling goods like sweets is not a choice but a necessity driven by financial hardship. The tragedy has highlighted how exposed these young individuals can be to criminal elements seeking to exploit them.
At Menzi High School, the atmosphere is reportedly one of mourning, with learners and staff grappling with the emotional aftermath of the incident. There are calls for counseling services to support those affected, particularly the friends and classmates of the deceased pupil.
Police are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward. Community members are encouraged to assist investigations by contacting Umlazi SAPS or providing anonymous tips that could help bring the perpetrators to justice.
As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by crime and economic hardship. The community now hopes for swift arrests and stronger measures to ensure the safety of young people striving for a better future.
