A community in Cape Town is reeling from shock and grief following the tragic death of a five-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet while on a routine walk to the shop with her aunt. The heart-wrenching incident occurred on Monday evening near Klipfontein Road in the Lusaka area of Nyanga, around 7 p.m.
According to eyewitnesses, the young girl and her aunt had just left home to buy food for supper. Moments later, the sound of three gunshots echoed through the neighborhood. One of the bullets struck the child in the back, exiting through her chest. The aunt, in a desperate attempt to save her niece, picked her up and screamed for help as neighbors rushed out of their homes in panic and confusion.
“There was chaos. They were only gone for a few minutes when shots rang out. We couldn’t believe what we saw,” said a visibly shaken community member. “She was just a little girl going to the shop. It’s heartbreaking.”
With no ambulance available at the time, the family had no choice but to transport the child to KTC Day Hospital using private means. Sadly, despite their urgent efforts, the child was declared dead upon arrival.
The police have confirmed the discovery of a cartridge from an R4 rifle at the scene — a military-grade weapon — raising serious concerns about the firepower circulating within the community. The use of such high-caliber weapons has sparked fear and anger among residents, many of whom say they no longer feel safe even walking down the street.
Community leaders and activists have condemned the senseless killing and are demanding urgent intervention from authorities. “How many more children must die before something is done?” questioned a local community organizer. “We are living in a war zone, and the government is silent. We need better policing, more visibility, and real solutions to stop this bloodshed.”
The tragic incident has reignited discussions about gun violence, especially in areas plagued by gang activity and criminal turf wars. Lusaka, like many other parts of Cape Town, has long been affected by violent crime, with children increasingly becoming innocent victims caught in the crossfire.
“This should never have happened,” said one resident. “She was just five. A baby. Now her family has to live with this pain for the rest of their lives.”
As the investigation continues, no arrests have been made, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Meanwhile, the community is in mourning. Vigils are being planned in remembrance of the little girl, as social media fills with messages of grief, anger, and calls for justice.
Rest in peace, little angel. Your life was precious, and your death will not be in vain.
