A tragic incident has left the Gqeberha community in shock after two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were found dead inside their Parsonsvlei home in the early hours of Saturday. Authorities believe the case may be a murder-suicide, with preliminary investigations indicating that the husband allegedly shot his wife before taking his own life.
The heartbreaking incident unfolded at a house in Buddeny Street, where the couple lived with their family. According to police, the deceased were a 34-year-old female officer and her 44-year-old husband, who was also a serving SAPS member.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg confirmed that officers responded to reports of a shooting shortly after midnight. Emergency services arrived at approximately 12:05 am after receiving information that gunshots had been heard at the property.
The alarm was reportedly raised by a close friend of the female officer. Police said the friend received a distressing phone call from the woman, who allegedly said she was being assaulted by her husband.
Concerned for her safety, the friend immediately rushed to the family’s home. However, before she could intervene, she reportedly heard several gunshots coming from inside the house. Realising the seriousness of the situation, she contacted the police for urgent assistance.
When officers arrived at the residence, they entered the property and discovered the bodies of the husband and wife inside. Both were declared dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the husband may have fatally shot his wife before turning the firearm on himself. As a result, police have opened two separate investigations—a murder case relating to the woman’s death and an inquest into the man’s death, which is standard procedure when no third party is believed to be involved.
One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the incident is that the couple’s two minor children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. Fortunately, neither child was physically injured.
Police confirmed that the children were safely removed from the scene and placed in the care of relatives while investigations continue.
Authorities have not yet revealed what may have led to the fatal incident, saying it is still too early to speculate. Detectives are gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses to establish exactly what happened before the shooting.
Captain Janse van Rensburg said the investigation remains in its early stages and that no further information can be released at this time.
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the devastating impact of domestic violence and the emotional pressures that can affect families, including those serving in law enforcement. Incidents involving police officers are particularly concerning because they often have access to service firearms and face high levels of workplace stress.
