A tragic road accident cast a shadow over what was meant to be a day of celebration this Mother’s Day, as nine people lost their lives in a devastating crash on the N2 highway near Mthunzini, in KwaZulu-Natal. The victims, believed to be members of the Zion Christian Church, were reportedly on their way to a religious service in Mtubatuba when their journey ended in heartbreak.
The accident occurred near the Empangeni area, with early reports indicating that the minibus taxi they were traveling in lost control, leading to the horrific crash. The minibus was carrying 24 congregants, the majority of whom were women. Sadly, nine of them died at the scene while others sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical.
Witnesses and first responders at the scene described a harrowing situation, with debris scattered across the highway and emergency personnel working tirelessly to assist the injured and retrieve the deceased. The identities of the victims have not yet been officially released, as authorities are still in the process of contacting family members and conducting investigations into the cause of the accident.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC, Siboniso Duma, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended his condolences to the affected families. “It is heartbreaking that this incident occurred on Mother’s Day, a time meant to honor and celebrate the lives of women who play a vital role in our families and communities,” Duma said. He further urged drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads, especially when transporting groups for religious and social gatherings.
Ndabezinhle Sibiya, a government spokesperson, echoed these sentiments, saying the province mourns alongside the families. “We are saddened by this loss, particularly because many of the victims were women who had set out to worship and strengthen their faith. Their passing is a loss not only to their families but to their communities and church,” he said.
Preliminary investigations suggest that fatigue, speeding, or mechanical failure could have contributed to the accident. Authorities have since launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause. In the meantime, safety campaigns and vehicle inspections are being intensified, particularly for group transport vehicles used for religious pilgrimages.
This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that still plague South African roads. It also highlights the importance of roadworthiness, responsible driving, and strict adherence to safety protocols, especially when transporting large numbers of people.
Counseling services have been arranged for survivors and the bereaved families, with local churches and community leaders stepping in to offer support. Memorial services are expected to be held in the coming days to honor the lives lost.
As the province mourns, there is a collective call for healing, reflection, and recommitment to safer travel. What was meant to be a joyful day of spiritual connection ended in sorrow, but through community support and remembrance, the victims will not be forgotten.
