Police have launched an investigation after two young people were found dead inside a room at a lodge in Sabie, Mpumalanga, in a tragic incident that has left their families, friends, and school community in mourning.
The two deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, a Grade 11 learner at St Stithians Girls’ College, and 19-year-old Ethan Coetzee, who completed his matric studies at St Stithians Boys’ College in 2025.
According to initial reports, the pair were discovered unresponsive inside a room at a lodge on Monday, 3 August 2026. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but despite their efforts, both teenagers were declared dead.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what led to their deaths. Police have since opened an inquest docket, which is the standard legal procedure followed in cases where the cause of death is unknown or where further investigation is required to determine the circumstances surrounding a person’s passing.
The bodies of the two teenagers have been taken for post-mortem examinations.
