The recent announcement of Stephanie and Hungani Ndlovu’s divorce has stirred emotions online, with some South Africans pointing fingers at actress Petronella Tshuma for allegedly influencing the couple’s decision to part ways.
Stephanie and Hungani, both well-known actors and once regarded as one of Mzansi’s favourite celebrity couples, confirmed their separation through a joint statement released on Sunday, 22 June 2025. While the couple didn’t provide full details regarding the reasons for their split, an old video resurfaced on social media that has now reignited debate.
In a since-deleted YouTube video filmed in 2022, Stephanie spoke openly about how she first entertained the idea of divorce during a conversation with her close friend, Petronella Tshuma. According to Stephanie, it was through this discussion that the possibility of separation between herself and Hungani first became a serious topic. Hungani also contributed to the video, noting that the conversation between the two friends revolved around what might happen should their marriage come to an end.
“Petronella is her friend. So, Petronella and Steph were having this conversation about, what if we were to separate? What would happen to everything we have together?” Hungani said in the video.
Stephanie further explained that they felt it was a necessary conversation to have, especially since they had started several business ventures together. “I think we thought it would be a good conversation to have because a lot of the times we just think once it’s over, then it’s over, but there are many elements to it, especially if you’ve started businesses together,” she added.
After a snippet of the video resurfaced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), many South Africans reacted with criticism aimed at Tshuma. Some accused her of planting the seed of doubt in Stephanie’s mind, ultimately leading to the breakdown of the marriage.
One user, @Mama_Bridgie, wrote: “I think she definitely played a big role in its breakdown.” Another, @KMpatiii, added: “They were cruising through marriage until Petronella siphoned the trust, poured petrol on the issues, and left them both stalled on divorce drive.”
However, not everyone agreed with this sentiment. Some social media users defended Petronella, arguing that friendships often involve tough conversations and that the decision to divorce ultimately lies with the couple, not an outsider. @KhanyeEdward commented: “Nothing to do with Petronella. It’s called marriage. A vacation is due. They will be fine.”
The backlash has also sparked wider discussions about whether married women should have unmarried friends. Some users suggested that such friendships could negatively influence marital relationships, while others dismissed this view as outdated and unfair.
Meanwhile, Stephanie Ndlovu has spoken publicly about her healing journey following the divorce, stating that she remains focused on her emotional well-being despite the public scrutiny. Hungani, too, has been candid about attending therapy for months prior to their official announcement.
As the public continues to dissect the reasons behind their separation, both actors have asked for privacy while navigating this difficult chapter in their lives.
