Former Generations actor Thabiso Mokhethi has opened up about the severe personal and financial hardships he faced after his acting career stalled. In a recent interview on the Engineer Your Life podcast, Mokhethi shared his story of survival, shedding light on the emotional and financial toll that followed his exit from the popular TV series.

From Fame to Financial Ruin

Thabiso Mokhethi rose to fame playing Samuel Khumalo on Generations, one of South Africa’s most watched soap operas. However, after being let go from the show, he experienced a steep and painful decline. Speaking openly, he admitted that he struggled with basic needs such as food and transport, saying, “There were times when, as an unemployed man, I couldn’t even afford an Uber. Sometimes, I didn’t have food to eat.”

The sudden change in lifestyle had a profound impact on him. Mokhethi admitted that he had tied his identity and self-worth to his success and possessions. Once he lost them, he fell into an emotional and spiritual crisis. “Coming from a position where I could provide for my family, to suddenly relying on others was a bitter pill to swallow,” he said.

Personal Tragedy Adds to the Pain

His financial challenges were compounded by a series of devastating personal losses. Mokhethi lost his mother in the same year he was dismissed from Generations. In 2021, his brother passed away, and his wife filed for divorce — making it one of the darkest periods in his life. He described these events as a series of blows that left him emotionally drained and searching for meaning.

Overcoming Addiction and Finding Faith

In a powerful moment of self-reflection, Mokhethi shared how he overcame drug addiction and depression. He credited his recovery to prayer and his faith, describing how God’s grace helped him transform his life. Through emotional posts on Instagram and podcast interviews, he has encouraged others going through similar trials to seek healing and maintain hope.

Not Alone in His Struggles

Mokhethi’s story echoes the experiences of other South African actors who have faced hard times after leaving the spotlight. Iconic actress Nandi Nyembe, known for roles in Zone 14 and other local dramas, recently revealed her struggles with health issues and financial strain. Bound to a wheelchair and caring for her ill son, Nyembe used up her savings on medical bills and eventually turned to the public for help. Her plea moved many, including Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, who made a substantial donation in support.

A Cautionary Tale for the Industry

Thabiso Mokhethi’s openness shines a light on the harsh reality many performers face once the cameras stop rolling. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of financial planning, mental health support, and resilience in an unpredictable industry.

Despite the hardships, Mokhethi continues to rebuild his life, offering a message of hope: that even from the darkest valleys, recovery is possible.
