In a significant breakthrough, police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of popular South African musician and businessman DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka. The arrest was made on Monday, bringing renewed hope for justice in a case that has gripped the nation since the star’s tragic death.
The suspect, Katiso “KT” Molefe, a well-known businessman, was apprehended at his home in the upmarket suburb of Sandton. According to sources close to the investigation, Molefe’s arrest follows months of intensive detective work and intelligence gathering. He is now officially linked to the brutal killing of DJ Sumbody, who was gunned down in a hail of bullets in November 2022 in Johannesburg while travelling with his bodyguard.
The late DJ Sumbody was widely loved for his vibrant personality, chart-topping amapiano hits, and successful ventures in the entertainment and hospitality industries. His untimely and violent death shocked the country, prompting a widespread call for justice. Until now, no one had been held accountable for the high-profile assassination.
What has shocked the public even more is Molefe’s criminal background. At the time of his arrest for DJ Sumbody’s murder, he was already out on bail for a separate murder case. Molefe stands accused, alongside three alleged hitmen — Michael Pule Tau, Musa Kekana, and Tlego Floyd Mabusela — in connection with the killing of engineer Armand Swart in Vereeniging in April 2024.
According to police sources, Molefe and his co-accused are believed to be part of an organised crime ring suspected of carrying out contract killings. Investigators are reportedly looking into the possibility that DJ Sumbody may have been targeted in a similar fashion, although no clear motive has been publicly confirmed at this stage.
Law enforcement officials have described Molefe’s arrest as a “major development” in both the DJ Sumbody and Armand Swart murder cases. The National Prosecuting Authority is expected to bring additional charges against Molefe as investigations continue.
DJ Sumbody’s family, who have been vocal in their quest for justice, welcomed the news of the arrest. “We are grateful that the police have finally made a move. We hope that this is the beginning of accountability,” a family spokesperson said.
The case is expected to draw widespread attention as it unfolds in court. Molefe is set to appear before a magistrate later this week, where the state is likely to oppose bail due to the seriousness of the allegations and his prior involvement in another murder case.
As the justice system takes its course, fans and the public alike are hoping that DJ Sumbody’s killers will finally face the full might of the law. His music and legacy live on, but the pain of his loss remains fresh for many.
